Fill in the start time, end time and unpaid break (minutes) for each day you worked. Leave a day empty to skip it. Totals update as you type.

For each day the calculator subtracts the start time from the end time, then subtracts the unpaid break. If the end time is earlier than the start time it assumes you worked past midnight and adds 24 hours, so a 10:00 pm to 6:00 am night shift counts as 8 hours. The daily totals are added up for the week. Hours beyond the overtime threshold (40 per week by default) are paid at the overtime multiplier (1.5 for time and a half). Decimal hours are minutes divided by 60, which is what most payroll systems want: 7 hours 30 minutes is 7.50, not 7.30.
| Start | End | Unpaid break | Hours and minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 09:00 | 17:30 | 30 min | 8:00 | 8.00 |
| 08:15 | 16:45 | 30 min | 8:00 | 8.00 |
| 07:30 | 15:00 | 30 min | 7:00 | 7.00 |
| 22:00 | 06:00 | 30 min | 7:30 | 7.50 |
| 09:00 | 12:00 | 0 min | 3:00 | 3.00 |
| Minutes | 5 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 30 | 40 | 45 | 50 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Decimal | 0.08 | 0.17 | 0.25 | 0.33 | 0.50 | 0.67 | 0.75 | 0.83 |
Subtract the start time from the end time and then subtract any unpaid break. For 9:00 am to 5:30 pm with a 30 minute lunch that is 8 hours 30 minutes minus 30 minutes = 8 hours.
Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25, 30 minutes is 0.50, 45 minutes is 0.75, and 20 minutes is 0.33.
In the US, federal law requires time and a half for hours over 40 in a workweek for most non-exempt employees. Some states and countries also use a daily threshold or a different weekly limit, so change the overtime fields to match your rules. This tool uses a weekly threshold only.
