| 馃寫 | New Moon | The Moon sits between Earth and the Sun, and its lit side faces away from us. It is not visible. |
| 馃寬 | Waxing Crescent | A thin sliver grows, visible low in the west after sunset (northern hemisphere). |
| 馃寭 | First Quarter | Half of the disc is lit, the Moon is high in the evening sky. |
| 馃寯 | Waxing Gibbous | More than half is lit and growing toward full. |
| 馃寱 | Full Moon | The whole near side is lit; the Moon rises around sunset and sets around sunrise. |
| 馃寲 | Waning Gibbous | Past full: still more than half lit, but shrinking, rising after dark. |
| 馃寳 | Last Quarter | The other half is lit; the Moon rises around midnight and is up in the morning. |
| 馃寴 | Waning Crescent | A thin sliver in the pre-dawn sky before the next new moon. |
New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Waning Crescent. Waxing means the lit part is growing, waning means it is shrinking.
About 29.5 days from one new moon to the next (the synodic month). Each phase lasts roughly three and a half days.
The page uses calculated new and full moon times and works out how far the Moon is between them at this moment. The illumination percentage is accurate to within about five percent.
The lit part is the same everywhere on the same night, but it appears flipped. In the northern hemisphere the right side lights up first as the Moon waxes, in the southern hemisphere the left side does.
A waxing moon is getting brighter each night, heading toward full. A waning moon is getting dimmer, heading toward new.
