How to Type Faster

Typing speed is measured in words per minute (WPM). The standard counts one word as five characters, so 300 correct characters in a minute is 60 WPM. Speed only counts if it is accurate, so the goal is to type fast without making many mistakes. Here is what is considered good, and how to improve.

What is a good typing speed?

WPMRough level
Under 30Beginner, usually looking at the keys
30-45Around average for everyday typing
45-60Comfortable for most office work
60-80Good
80-100Very good
100+Fast, usually a trained touch typist

These bands are rough rules of thumb, not an official standard. Different tests use different texts, so scores differ a little from one site to the next.

Tips to type faster

  1. Learn to touch type. Put your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;) and learn which finger reaches each key. Stop looking at the keyboard.
  2. Accuracy first. Slow down until you rarely make mistakes, then speed up gradually. Fixing errors costs more time than typing carefully.
  3. Practise a little every day. Fifteen to twenty minutes of focused practice beats a long session once a week.
  4. Keep a steady rhythm. Even keystrokes are faster than bursts followed by pauses.
  5. Look ahead. Read the next word while typing the current one. This is the main difference between average and fast typists.
  6. Sit well. Wrists relaxed and straight, elbows near 90 degrees, screen at eye level. Tension slows you down and can cause strain.
  7. Work on your weak keys and letter pairs. After a test, notice which letters you hesitate on and drill them.
  8. Track progress. Retake the typing test weekly. Your best result is saved in your browser.

FAQ

What does WPM mean?

WPM means words per minute. By convention one word is counted as 5 characters, including spaces, so 300 correct characters typed in one minute is 60 WPM.

What is a good typing speed?

Commonly, 40 WPM is seen as average for everyday typing, 60 to 80 WPM as good and above 100 WPM as very fast. Accuracy matters as much as speed, because correcting mistakes slows you down.

How long does it take to type faster?

Most people who practise 15 to 20 minutes a day notice an improvement within a few weeks. How much you gain depends on your starting point and on whether you practise accurately.

Do I need to touch type?

Touch typing, typing without looking at the keys, is the most reliable route to high speeds because your eyes stay on the text. It feels slow at first, so expect your speed to dip before it climbs.
