How it works

Words are drawn at random from a list of about 280 very common English words, so there is no punctuation or capital letters to slow you down. Your WPM follows the standard rule: 5 characters (spaces included) count as one word, and only words you typed correctly are counted. Accuracy is the share of words you typed correctly. Your best score for each duration is saved in this browser only.

FAQ

How is WPM calculated?

The standard method counts every 5 characters, including spaces, as one word. WPM is the number of correctly typed characters divided by 5, divided by the minutes elapsed.

What is a good typing speed?

The average adult types roughly 40 words per minute. 60 to 80 WPM is good for office work, and above 100 WPM is very fast.

Does accuracy matter?

Yes. In this test only correctly typed words count toward your WPM, so mistakes lower your score as well as your accuracy percentage.
