Memorial Day is the last Monday of May, so it falls between May 25 and May 31.
It honours US military personnel who died in service. It was once called Decoration Day and became a Monday holiday under a law that took effect in 1971.
It is widely seen as the unofficial start of summer, and the long weekend is one of the busiest for travel.
Federal offices, banks, the post office and US stock markets are closed.
