How the date works
Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday. It is the last day of the carnival season, the day before Ash Wednesday, which is the start of Lent. It is always 47 days before Easter Sunday.
Because Easter moves, Mardi Gras can fall between February 3 and March 9.
The carnival season runs from Epiphany (January 6) up to Mardi Gras, so a late Easter makes for a longer season. Big parades take place in the days and weeks before the Tuesday itself.
In the UK, Ireland and Australia the same day is known as Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday.
