Diwali, the festival of lights, follows the Hindu lunar calendar. The main day falls on the new moon (amavasya) in the month of Kartika, so it moves between mid-October and mid-November on the Gregorian calendar.
The festival lasts five days: Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali), Lakshmi Puja (the main Diwali day), Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj.
The main day can differ by a day between regions and communities because of local moon sighting and tithi timings. Check a local calendar or temple listing for your own observance.
