How the date works
Columbus Day is the second Monday in October, so it falls between October 8 and October 14. It is a US federal holiday, which means federal offices, banks and the post office are generally closed.
Many states and cities mark the same day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of, or alongside, Columbus Day. The date is the same in both cases.
Whether schools, state offices and private employers close varies by state and employer, so check locally.
Canadian Thanksgiving falls on the same second Monday of October.
