How the date works
Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October, so it falls between October 8 and October 14. It is a statutory holiday in most provinces and territories, and the long weekend is the main time for the family dinner.
US Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday in November, about six weeks later. The two holidays are on different dates and have different histories.
Some provinces and employers differ: in a few Atlantic provinces it is an optional holiday for private employers, so check your own province and workplace.
The date is the same as Columbus Day in the United States, which also falls on the second Monday in October.
