How it works

Roman numerals add symbol values from largest to smallest (VIII = 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8). When a smaller symbol comes before a larger one it is subtracted: IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900. The standard system stops at 3999 because there is no symbol for 5000 in the basic set. Invalid numerals such as IIII or VX are rejected.
