How the dates are worked out

Thanksgiving (US): the fourth Thursday of November, so it can fall between November 22 and November 28.
Black Friday: the Friday right after Thanksgiving, between November 23 and November 29.
Small Business Saturday: the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
Cyber Monday: the Monday after Thanksgiving, which is the Monday after Black Friday weekend.
Giving Tuesday: the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, the day after Cyber Monday.

Because Thanksgiving moves between the 22nd and the 28th, the number of shopping days left before Christmas changes from year to year. In 2026 there are 28 days from Black Friday (November 27) to Christmas Day (December 25); see the Christmas countdown for the exact time left.

Is Black Friday a public holiday?

Not a federal holiday in the United States, although many states and employers give the day off, and many schools close. Thanksgiving itself is a federal holiday. Black Friday sales have also spread to the UK, Canada, Australia and many other countries, where Thanksgiving is not on the same date, but the sales usually still run on the same Friday.

Other Thanksgivings

Canada: Thanksgiving is the second Monday of October, six weeks or so before the US holiday. See the Canadian Thanksgiving countdown, or all dates on when is Thanksgiving?
United States: fourth Thursday of November: days until Thanksgiving.
