New Year's Eve is December 31 and New Year's Day is January 1 in the Gregorian calendar, so only the weekday changes. The weekday moves forward one day each year, and two after a leap year.
When January 1 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, many countries move the day off. In England and Wales a substitute bank holiday is given on the next Monday, so January 3, 2028 would be the day off after a Saturday January 1, 2028. In Scotland January 2 is also a bank holiday.
In the US, when January 1 falls on a Saturday, federal employees observe the holiday on the preceding Friday (December 31, 2027 for New Year's Day 2028). Private employers set their own rules.
