Live countdown
Rules in one minute
US and Canada: daylight saving time starts on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November. The change happens at 2:00 a.m. local time: in spring the clock jumps from 2:00 to 3:00 (you lose an hour), in autumn it goes from 2:00 back to 1:00 (you gain an hour).
UK and EU: summer time starts on the last Sunday of March and ends on the last Sunday of October. The change happens at 01:00 UTC everywhere at once: that is 1:00 a.m. jumping to 2:00 a.m. in the UK in March (BST starts), and 2:00 a.m. back to 1:00 a.m. in October. In central Europe it is 2:00 to 3:00 in March and 3:00 back to 2:00 in October.
Mnemonic: “spring forward, fall back”. Clocks go forward in spring and back in autumn.

Why the US and Europe change on different dates
The two sides use different rules, so for a few weeks each year the time difference between New York and London is 4 hours instead of the usual 5. This happens after the US clocks go forward but before the UK/EU ones do (in 2026: March 8 to March 29), and again after the UK/EU clocks go back but before the US ones do (October 25 to November 1). Use the time difference calculator when you schedule calls across the Atlantic in those weeks.
Other places
Australia: New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the ACT change; Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not. Their clocks go forward on the first Sunday of October and back on the first Sunday of April.
New Zealand: forward on the last Sunday of September, back on the first Sunday of April.
No clock change: Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii in the US, most of Asia, Africa and South America, and Iceland.
What to do when the clocks change
Phones, computers and most smart devices update themselves, but wall clocks, ovens, car dashboards and some watches need to be set by hand.
Smoke and carbon monoxide alarm batteries are a common thing to check on the same day.
When the clocks go back you gain an hour of sleep; when they go forward the night is an hour shorter, so go to bed a little earlier the night before.
For shifts, flights and meetings set around the change, check the time in both zones. The online clock shows the current time in 25 time zones.
