To square a number, multiply it by itself. 2 squared is written 2² or 2^2, and the answer is 4.

How to work out 2 squared

• Direct: 2 × 2 = 4.
• From the previous square: 1² = 1, and 2² = 1 + (2 × 2 − 1) = 1 + 3 = 4.
