The 20 Magic 8 Ball answers

The classic toy has exactly 20 answers. Ten are affirmative, five are non-committal and five are negative, and this page uses the same set with equal odds for each.

Affirmative (10)

It is certain. It is decidedly so. Without a doubt. Yes definitely. You may rely on it. As I see it, yes. Most likely. Outlook good. Yes. Signs point to yes.

Non-committal (5)

Reply hazy, try again. Ask again later. Better not tell you now. Cannot predict now. Concentrate and ask again.

Negative (5)

Don't count on it. My reply is no. My sources say no. Outlook not so good. Very doubtful.

How it works

When you shake, the page draws one of the 20 answers with crypto.getRandomValues. It never reads your question and nothing is sent anywhere. Treat it as a game: it is a fun way to break a tie, but it knows nothing about your life. For choices with more than two options, use the spinning wheel; for a pure 50/50 use the coin flip or the yes or no oracle.

FAQ

How many answers does a Magic 8 Ball have?

The classic toy has 20 answers: 10 affirmative, 5 non-committal and 5 negative. This online version uses the same 20 answers, each equally likely.

Is the online Magic 8 Ball really random?

Yes. The answer is picked with your browser's cryptographic random generator. It does not read your question, so it cannot know anything about it. It is for fun, not for real decisions.

What kind of questions should I ask?

Ask a question that can be answered with yes or no, such as "Will it rain tomorrow?" or "Should I order pizza?". Open questions like "What should I eat?" get odd answers, so use a wheel for those.

What are the chances of a yes, a maybe or a no?

Because 10 of the 20 answers are affirmative, 5 are non-committal and 5 are negative, you get a yes-type answer 50% of the time, a maybe 25% of the time and a no-type answer 25% of the time.

Can I shake it on my phone?

Tap the ball or the Shake button. Pressing Space or Enter on a keyboard also works.
